Windscribe Review Australia 2026

Editorial verdict

Sourced personal VPN — USD list, real free tier, Canadian jurisdiction, public PDFs

Windscribe is for sale to Australians at printed USD prices, with unlimited personal devices, WireGuard/OpenVPN/IKEv2 apps, advertised five-city AU exits, and a genuine free plan that does not include Australia. The honest yearly list is US$69, not US$5.75/month cancellable; a same-day Back to School promo printed US$39/year. The operator is a Canadian company in Five Eyes. Packetlabs and Leviathan PDFs were read; they are not proof of zero retained account data. Advertised Australian servers are not data residency. No independent speed, leak or streaming tests were run.

Best for
Australian personal-VPN buyers who can pay USD, want a real free tier or unlimited-device apps and advertised AU city exits, will accept a Canadian legal entity, and will open dated public audit PDFs rather than a lab test.
Not ideal for
Anyone budgeting the US$5.75 or US$3.25 teaser as a cancellable monthly price, buyers who need confirmed Australian data residency, AUD GST-inclusive checkout or a non-Five-Eyes jurisdiction, free-tier users who need an Australian exit, iOS users who need split tunnel, or organisations that need private-resource access.

Overview

Windscribe is a personal VPN. Ownership, logging claims and advertised exit locations are recorded separately. An Australian exit IP is not proof of Australian data residency.

Feature highlights

These highlights come from vendor documentation and editorial analysis of public sources. They are not firsthand test results or a claim that every listed capability was exercised in a trial.

  • USD list prices that do not jump on the printed yearly card

No-promo /upgrade billed US$9.00/month or US$69/year. Homepage says the signed-up price is the price you pay forever. That is not Australian GST-inclusive AUD.

  • A genuine free plan, without Australian locations

2 GB/month without email, 10 GB with email, ten countries. API: all ten Australian groups are Pro-only.

  • Unlimited personal devices with an anti-sharing rule

Feature page: no fixed cap for personal use. Upgrade footer and terms prohibit account sharing.

  • Advertised five Australian cities

Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney (ten Pro data-centre groups on the API). That is not Australian account data residency.

  • Firewall documented on listed apps, split tunnel not on iOS

Desktop Firewall plus mobile Always On VPN. Split tunneling is documented for Windows, Mac, Linux and Android, not iOS.

  • Public Packetlabs and Leviathan PDFs you can open

June 2024 Packetlabs retest and 2021/2022 Leviathan source-review PDFs were downloaded and read. A vendor court-case blog is not those reports.

Ownership and jurisdiction

Legal entity and jurisdiction are not the exit-server map.

Terms updated 5 Aug 2026: owner is Windscribe Limited, a company registered in the province of Ontario, Canada. Abuse mail: 555 Richmond St West, Toronto, ON, M5V 3B1, Canada. Choice of law Ontario; courts in Toronto. About: self-funded, no VCs. Canada is a Five Eyes member. Jurisdiction here is the legal entity, not the exit-server map. The 2021 Leviathan PDF still used a Richmond Hill mail-drop address.

Logging and retained data

A vendor no-logs claim is not proof of zero retained account or payment data.

Logging policy
Vendor no-logs claim
Retained service data
Documented retained service data

Privacy policy 30 Jul 2024: no historical VPN sessions, source IP or sites visited. No-identifying-logs page: does not store browsing/DNS, real IP, assigned VPN IP, connection timestamps, session duration or per-session bandwidth, or traffic content. RAM-disk / FreshScribe infrastructure is described on that page and the ethics page.

  • username and password (hashed password on the free-plan explainer)
  • optional email for password recovery, 10 GB free-tier upgrade and service mail
  • payment-processor transaction ID stored 30 days for fraud prevention
  • total bytes transferred in a 30-day period (free-tier and abuse)
  • timestamp of last activity on the network (date only on the no-logs page)
  • number of parallel connections (abuse / account-sharing)
  • which app versions have been activated (no-logs page)
  • in-memory OpenVPN/IKEv2 username, connection time and data transferred while connected, discarded on disconnect
  • first-three-octets of visitor IP plus browser metadata in self-hosted Piwik/Matomo on the website

A no-logs claim is not proof of zero retained data. Terms: providing an email for extra free bandwidth is permission to send promotional offers; unsubscribing drops the account to the basic free plan. Packetlabs May 2024 found protocol logging on the in-scope node; the June 2024 retest marked that finding remediated. Court/seizure write-ups are vendor narratives, not inspected case files.

Account/control-plane data is not described as stored in Australia. Ethics: self-hosted, no third-party website analytics. This is not a numeric privacy score.

Locations and hosting

Advertised exit countries, physical-versus-virtual evidence, control-plane hosting and account data residency are separate. An Australian exit IP is not Australian data residency.

Australia VPN page 12 Sep 2026 advertises Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. Upgrade location picker: Australia 10 Pro Data Centers. assets.windscribe.com/serverlist/mob-v2/1 the same day listed those five AU cities, ten groups, all pro=1, and 74 locations / 71 country codes overall (including Fake Antarctica AQ). Marketing copy the same day also printed 69+ countries / 112 cities on /upgrade, 69+ / 135+ on the homepage, 190+ locations on /vpn-servers, and over 85 countries in that page's FAQ. Those vendor figures were not reconciled here. KB: servers are physically in the advertised country except Fake Antarctica (Toronto). That is vendor documentation, not a traceroute. An Australian exit IP is not Australian data residency. data_hosting stays unknown rather than a green AU badge.

Windows: Windows 10/11 x64 and ARM64. Six protocols: WireGuard (default), IKEv2, OpenVPN UDP/TCP, Stealth and WSTunnel (other). Firewall uses Windows Filtering Platform; Automatic / Manual / Always-on / Always-on+ modes. Split tunnel inclusive/exclusive, apps and host/IP. Not leak-tested. Secure Hotspot and Proxy Gateway are desktop extras, not scored separately.

macOS: Native universal binary (Apple Silicon and Intel). Same six protocols. Firewall via native macOS APIs. Split tunneling per-app or network-level, include or exclude. Not leak-tested.

iOS: iOS/iPadOS 15+. Six protocols including WireGuard, IKEv2, OpenVPN UDP/TCP, Stealth and WSTunnel. Firewall page: use OS Always On VPN on iOS (same effect as the desktop Firewall). Split tunneling page lists Windows, Mac, Linux and Android — not iOS. App Store refunds go through Apple. Not leak-tested.

Android: Play Store, F-Droid and source. Six protocols. Kill switch via Android Always On VPN. Split tunnel include/exclude apps. Not leak-tested.

Linux: Debian/Ubuntu (amd64 and aarch64), Fedora, Arch, openSUSE. Five protocols: WireGuard, OpenVPN UDP/TCP, Stealth, WSTunnel. IKEv2 is not on the Linux protocol list. Firewall and split tunneling (per-app and network-level) are documented. Not leak-tested.

PDF downloaded over HTTPS on 12 Sep 2026 from the Google Drive link on the vendor audit KB and read. Marked CLIENT CONFIDENTIAL; Windscribe published the link. Original test: low overall risk; finding 4.2.1 was protocol logging (IKEv2 origin IP in memory and auth.log; OpenVPN client-config-dir timestamps; microservice credential leaks). Retest 24 Jun 2024: those findings marked remediated on the in-scope node. Point-in-time, one node, not operating-effectiveness evidence after 24 Jun 2024, and not a numeric security score. A remediating retest is not proof of zero retained account/payment data.

How this review was made

Reviews separate vendor documentation, editorial analysis and firsthand records. They are not interchangeable.

  • Vendor documentationPublic pages from Windscribe and other sites. Recorded HTTP(S) URLs are listed under Sources. A source URL is a document we recorded, not a claim that every sentence on this page was checked against that URL.
  • Editorial analysisSoftwareHQ's written verdict and scores for Australian buyers. The header score is an editorial assessment, not a user-review average, not a lab result, and not a number derived from how many evidence records exist.
  • Firsthand recordsThis review has no firsthand observation records, trial walkthroughs, or screenshots from a logged-in SoftwareHQ account. Missing tests stay not tested.

This page does not rank products by speed or security from documentation or from evidence count.

Checked by SoftwareHQ Editorial Team. There is no named author profile for this page; attribution stays with the SoftwareHQ editorial team. How we test and the editorial policy for scoring, independence and affiliate rules.

Windscribe Alternatives

If Windscribe doesn’t quite fit your needs, consider these alternatives for Australian businesses:

  • NordVPN Personal VPN with prepaid intros, advertised AU exits, login-walled audit.
  • Surfshark Unlimited-device VPN with prepaid AUD intros and a public Deloitte report.
  • ExpressVPN USD prepaid VPN, advertised AU exits, inspectable KPMG report.
  • Proton VPN Swiss-jurisdiction VPN with a restricted free plan and public Securitum PDFs.
  • Mullvad VPN Swedish numbered-account VPN at a flat €5/month, public audit PDFs. From $5/mo.

Buyer guide

Source-based VPN guides for Windscribe: what a VPN encrypts, billed-term cash, free versus paid caps, how intro differs from renewal, how to read audits, how kill switch, split tunnel and protocols vary by OS, and when a consumer exit is the wrong product for company resources. Not a ranking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Windscribe available to Australian users?
Yes on the public site. On 12 September 2026 windscribe.com loaded from Australia, advertised Adelaide/Brisbane/Melbourne/Perth/Sydney exits, and sold USD subscriptions. The free plan’s ten countries do not include Australia. Using a VPN in Australia is a legal-use question for the user; this site does not give legal advice.
How much does Windscribe cost in Australia?
/upgrade in AU Chrome on 12 Sep 2026, no promo: Monthly US$9.00 billed monthly; Yearly billed US$69 then US$69/year (US$5.75/mo teaser); Build A Plan US$1 per location per month, US$3 minimum. Promo EDUMCATE printed US$39.00 billed every 12 months (US$3.25/mo teaser) and the homepage said that sale ended 14 Sep 2026. Hand checks 6900/12=575 and 3900/12=325. GST was not printed. Checkout was not started.
Does Windscribe include GST?
Unknown for Australian GST. The upgrade grid prints USD. That is not a printed 10% GST line. gst_basis is unknown. Checkout was not started.
Is there a free Windscribe plan?
Yes. 2 GB/month with a username only, or 10 GB/month with a confirmed email, on ten countries. No credit card. Australia is Pro-only. Paid website purchases have a 7-day refund window if usage stays under 10 GB; that refund is not the free tier. Apple and Amazon refunds go through those stores. Crypto refunds are Bitcoin-only above US$10.
Does an Australian Windscribe server mean data stays in Australia?
No. Advertised Australian exits are not Australian data residency. The operator is Windscribe Limited in Ontario. data_hosting remains unknown rather than AU. Fake Antarctica is documented as Toronto.
Has Windscribe been independently audited?
Yes, with public PDFs. Packetlabs’ 26 June 2024 retest PDF and Leviathan’s 24 September 2021 desktop and 4 March 2022 mobile source-review PDFs were downloaded and read. The May 2024 Packetlabs pass had found protocol logging; the retest marked that remediated on the in-scope node. Those are point-in-time reviews, not proof of zero retained account data, and not a numeric security score. Greek/Dutch court and seizure write-ups are vendor narratives, not audit reports.
